For rust treatment I have lots of experience with converters but mostly OSPHO and Corroseal. After treating with those, I do a primer and then a finish coat. When I had to paint my carport canopy frame that was starting to rust, I thought I would save a step and got this Xionlab converter and primer all in one step. When applying, it went on just like painting with the common red oxide primer often used on steel. My concern was that I could not see the rust getting converted like I do when I use OSPHO or Corroseal. Any converting happening was done out of sight under the primer coat. I did save a step on a difficult to paint structure, but I can only assume that maybe the rust got converted as I do not know. Maybe in a few years I will know, and I will edit this review.

I've used similar products - POR-15, KBS coatings, etc. All of those required the metal to be coated with a cleaner, then a separate rust converter, sprayed down with water and then have the coating applied for the best results. Basically, it was a multi step process. Using this was pretty easy, I've so far used it to cover the interior metal floor of my classic car. The floor had some rust spots (minor) so I wanted to use it to stop the current rust and for future protection. It went on easy and looks great and most importantly I did not have to spray down the interior with the multi step process - the acid converter, the water both of which would have puddled in my floor pans. So far I have no complaints, I cannot comment on the longevity of this product's protection yet - I'm unsure of how well it will protect from future rust but time will tell. -Quantity for the price, you can't beat. -Coated the car well - plenty left over for other areas of the car.

Using to encapsulate & protect rusty metal shingles. *READ* the manufacturers instructions - IF YOU DO NOT TOP COAT YOU *MUST* APPLY TWO COATS of this product - that may effect the cost significantly (see photo of detections from for mfg website). The application is easy & coverage is good - product must be stirred well. Clean-up is easy too. Just needs to soak/rinse alot. I have applied by brush so far, but may try with a sprayer - if a do spray, I will update this review with results.

I have treated rust and painted many things in my many years of equipment maintenance. From road sanders to golf course mowers, there are few things out there more exposed to corrosive elements. But then there are the cars and trucks driven on our Minnesota roads. What you are looking at is an old snowmobile trailer that I hammered and wire brushed thick layers of rust off. When I saw this product on Amazon I thought, let's give it a try. Water cleanup sounded like a good thing. I did a few test patches with a brush. When I first opened the can I thought it was tomato soup, condensed! But stirring softened it up magically. Application with the brush was easy, good coverage, smooth appearance. Today I sprayed the whole trailer (and my driveway). I swear, those paint particles are magnetic! The paint/converter goes on so easy with no hint of a run or adhesion problems. There was no warning on the can that said temperature must be between this and that. It was 41 degrees when I started. That stuff is on there. Time will tell how many years it lasts. It's too late in the year to put a topcoat on this fall unless I can make room in my garage, but they say it is not a problem. I'll have to report back next year.

this product is easy to spray , easy to clean up, doesnt smell too bad .. BUT I sprayed automotive filler primer over the top and some areas did not stay stuck, has several spots that peal up in crevices inside corners and some flat spots. Emailed company for tech support ,, NO RESPONSE ! UPDATE : Xionlab got Emails mixed up apparently . Once reviewed they worked very hard to resolve the issue and give guidance on applications etc. pealing may have been my error, will have to try it again..

I was a little skeptical to purchase this for what I needed it for-but I can tell you I am glad I did. I am currently Wet-sandblasting this truck frame. If you do not prep the frame fast enough after blasting you will get flash rust. I tried a few other products with no luck. I used this and I am more then happy with the end results. You will see in the pictures the frame looks gray after blasting it, and then I brushed the product on and the frame was not even 100% dry yet ( but I did prep before I applied this product ) and I was amazed how it went on. The big test was to see if the rust would bleed through the product and I can say it did not. This has been on the frame for about 5 weeks now and it looks perfect, I still have no put a top coat on it yet because I am not sure what color I am going to use yet. I have not tried spraying it yet, but I will be soon. I was not sure how well a water based product would hold up or even stop the rust from coming back-but I can tell you it works. And if you think it is expensive-trust me it is a bargain compared to the other products out there and sub par results. For what I have used it for- I can not recommend it enough. Read the directions and you will be good to go. I had originally bought the smaller container first just to try-and once I saw how well it worked I purchased the gallon. ***The first two pictures are after the frame was wet-sandblasted, the next to pictures are with the product on it.

Great rust preventer. Brush painted on steel porch posts with rustoleum satin black overcoats x2, light sanding between coats...Florida rain and lots of sun and not a smidge of rust about two years now.

Used this product to seal and stop rust that was compromising the metal pan holding the cement on my back porch. Seemed to adhere very well and I can only hope it stops the rust from continuing. That will be determined over time. (that's why 4 and not five stars). Overall pleased with this product and after looking at similar paints I thought this was superior. At this point would purchase again.

I thinned it down and used it as an adhesive to affix foil tape to a (cast iron) steam boiler. It kept the tape in place long enough to cover the patch with furnace cement. I also did 2 test areas, the thinned primer worked as an adhesive for 3 cycles, but the un-thinned primer/tape test is still holding the tape after over a dozen cycles. The weak point on the thinned primer test was the tape, disintegrating due to the heat. The primer is incredibly durable. I found the best way to remove the thinned primer was to use a grinding burr; sanding took too long. One problem with the rust converter/primer, is that it comes in a regular paint container, so it's difficult to pour without wasting some. Something this expensive should come in a bottle or something easier to dispense. BTW: I should add, the tape I used does have an adhesive backing meant for metal, but the tape doesn't work well on cast iron. Also, I don't recommend using the foil tape and furnace cement to make a patch--I do expect the moisture to destroy that patch at some point (I normally use fiberglass and silicone which works for years on low pressure systems)

I write reviews on probably 5% of the stuff I buy, don't have the time. But this one deserve a review. I used this for the first time to paint the "under side" of my mower deck. It worked exactly as manufacturer describes / claims, and as the video on their site shows. It goes on very easily like any paint or primer would. I took before and after pictures, but have no time to upload them now, will do that later. Excellent coverage. I was amazed that I did 2 Generous coats using less than half of the Pint that I ordered [ 52" mower deck ]. Really Impressed ! It also fills in any cracks between welding points and then hardens leaving a harder and smoother surface, eliminating water and dirt "hiding places". Final surface is very solid. Obviously I just used it and the proof will be how it looks at the end of the summer after using the mower for the season. I am hoping that grass stops accumulating and clumping, as it is now a much smoother and cleaner surface than the rusty surface it used to be. Will write an update in October. ... I decided to download the pic's and post them, attached.

I have been trying out different rust converting and prevention products for years, and I usually have a similar feeling about them, not great. This product, however, has broken that trend for Im and me here to say that, between its actual performance AND the fact that its cleanup is as easy as it gets, being water-soluble makes it a clear standout. Out of the can, it's incredibly thick, which is nice for brush application, but if you are like me and would rather spray it, their 15% dilution recommendation is PERFECT for an HVLP gun with a 1.4 tip. It lays down well and dries quickly, and as long as you allow it time to dry, it fully holds up to the environment far better than I anticipated.

Ad didn't have that headline.Can label states rusty metal best for adhesion.I have mostly clean metal for this project.Had to go buy metal primer locally to finish project before rain came.Will use on my rusty metal projects in the future.I tried some on very rusty metal and it adhered to and hardened the metal as the can label stated.Except for the mix-up in the ad description I am very satisfied.

I have used the rust converter on several metal items including a trailer I built. It goes on very smooth and works very well. I let it sit for a couple of days and then painted over it. It doesn't bleed through after painting and so far I have not seen any rust coming through any painted area.

This product has worked exactly as described! For my projects it worked best when thinned as directed - which also allows it to cover MUCH more area! Don't let the price tag chase you away. A job done right that stands the test of time and elements is worth it. I just ordered more for because I can can now confidently deal with the rust and productively maintain my equipment and hardware.

This is the primer coat over light oxidation to use in dry or wet conditions. Almost no odor and cleans up easy with water. I used it to coat light rust on crawl space lally columns with very high humidity. Great coverage to, this small can goes along way, great product nothing else like it.

I've seen similar products for rust conversions and am limited to space, I'm rebuilding a 72 Burb 4x4 that will be my daily driver, and doing most of the restoration outside under a large tarp. I was very pleased with the results I used it under my 65 pony. I bought a gallon and still have 1/2 left and many parts to spray. Strong stuff! Now I need a Sticker for my tool box.

After a good stirring in the can, I applied with brush. Bonded well to slightly crusty and rusty surface. Dried finish is hard. Recommend.

My application for the XIONLAB product was a rusting steel natural gas pipe that supplies the house from the meter and the pipe is probably 80 feet long. I used a non-metallic abrasive wheel on a drill along with a wire brush to remove flaking rust. Then, I lightly went over the surface with a Scotch Brite pad and blew everything off with compressed air. I used both a small brush and small sock to apply the product and it went on beautifully. The XIONLAB demo video was extremely helpful and made me feel good about purchasing and using the product.
