This was a roof replacement where an old rolled roof was removed and a new shingled roof was installed, along with installation of a new ridge vent. This did not involve replacement of the entire roof, just the rolled part of it. My insurance company had said that they would cancel insurance of the house because of the rolled part of the roof, which was visible in satellite photos. One of the members of the work crew told me that the old rolled roof had not been an appropriate installation in the first place. There was a huge ice dam at the edge of the rolled roof -- at least 4 inches thick. The work crew arrived at 7:45 AM and were finished by 1:00 PM. From below I could see them working with hammer and chisel to remove the ice dam -- it was slow going but they were thorough and meticulous about it. It took them just about 2 hours to remove the old rolled roof. This was followed by installation of the underlayment, shingles and a new ridge vent on the very top of the house. The next day, February 7, was the very coldest day of the year with temperatures down to 3 degrees Fahrenheit and howling winds. Since they just installed the new ridge vent -- which involved putting a hole in my roof, I expected that the house would be colder, but I found to my considerable surprise that it was actually warmer! The reason for this, I believe, is the underlayment they installed over the last 3 feet of the roof-just above the gutters. The underlayment is designed to insulate and prevent the formation of ice dams. The roof immediately prior to the gutters did not have any intervening attic -- the last 3 feet of the roof is just above the interior part of the upper rooms of the house. That caused the heat leak and formation of ice dams on top of the old rolled roof. The work crew was very fast and professional and the results, including a warmer house in the middle of winter were delightful. They also did a good job of cleaning up after themselves. The job was reasonably priced and well worth the investment. I could not be more pleased.
