Huw is still the absolute GOAT!Quick update since my last review in 2022. Over the past couple of years, I’ve continued to face a series of injuries, setbacks, and challenges AKA life, as I continue my quest to “Harden the heck up and get better at life”—via increasingly harder ultra-marathons. All of this as a late-40s, clapped-out ex-amateur rugby player juggling a hectic life, married, raising two awesome ADHD kids, demanding business, travel, crazy hobbies, coaching, all while trying to be the best son, husband, dad, and friend I can.Throughout, Huw has been relentless in rebuilding, testing, planning, and pushing me, all while being a great mate. My weekly sessions with Huw are a highlight of my week!Over the last 20 years, about once every year or two, I’ve completely blowen out my lower back. Each episode mean’s no training for two weeks and another six to eight weeks to recover fully. So, I finally decided to consult a sports DR to get to the root of the problem. After an MRI, I discovered I have a couple of clapped-out discs at L5/S1, and the DR told me to switch sports, as ultra-running was now no longer an option. After being told about my Clapped out Back, I was absolute gutted….. straight away I imagined myself becoming “normal,” ………. fat, sitting on the couch, watching TV, drinking beer, and reminiscing about the glory days with other weak Muppets who’d also given up on life……. Then after an eternity (a few minutes when your also ADHD) of what I can only imagine it feels like being “woke, weak, victimized and having pronouns”, I right hooked myself, had a cup of cement, and remembering you only live once, and I don’t believe in reincarnation…… So, figuring there must surely be a workaround, as there always is! I went to see Huw!Huw read over and looked at my report & scans, looked at me, then paused for a few seconds for dramatic effect…….. then calmly said, “I have athletes with backs five times more stuffed than yours, you’ll be sweet” ………. “Ok here’s the plan….. Let’s rebuild your core, activate your lower abs, tweak your form, take the pressure off your lower back, and get you dialed back in again, so you can keep running (Jogging/hiking/walking/crawling) Ultra’s.” ………… BOOM!!!!!! Giddy-up, and just like that we were back in business baby 😊!!!!!!!!We focused on rebuilding my core, set some ambitious goals, and got to work…….. So, here’s what happened:In 2023, I finished the UTMB Kosciuszko 100 Miler Ultra in Kosciuszko National Park—170km with 6,500m elevation gain and loss, finishing in 33 hours and 59 minutes. Out of 365 starters, I placed 130th, with only 151 runners finishing in brutally tough conditions, which included summiting Mt. Kosciuszko (Australia’s tallest mountain) and five other peaks, all in relentless cold ass rain, that turned the trails to poo and crushed souls. In 2024, I finished the Steamboat Gravel Bike 100 Miler at an average elevation of 8,500 feet and 3,000m elevation gain/loss, completing it in 7 hours and 24 minutes. I also completed a Goggins 4x4x48 Ultra Marathon running 6.5km every four hours for 48 hours, totaling 80km over 12 runs in two days.In 2025, I Finished the Silverheels 105km Ultra in Fairplay, Colorado, with an average race elevation of 10,800 feet (ranging from 9,000ft to 13,000ft), 4,200m elevation gain/loss, finishing in 22 hours and 22 minutes. I placed 15th out of 45, with only 22 finishers. Plus, I completed my second Goggins 4x4x48 Ultra* —this time with a twist: 86km total, running 7km plus 100 push-ups and sit-ups every four hours for 48 hours, resulting in 86km, 1,200 push-ups, and 1,200 sit-ups.In 2026, I’ll be heading back to Colorado for a 100-miler in the mountains. If you want to stay average don’t see Huw, just continue to see your out of shape PT wearing Lu-Lu Lemon & white Nikes that have never been run in.However, if you want to CRUSH LIFE and be a better human, go see HUW!!!!!!
