I started attending American Martial Arts Academy before COVID, when I was around 9 or 10 years old, and stayed until I was about 15. Those years meant so much to me. I went as much as I could because I truly loved being there. During that time, I earned my black belt, but more importantly, I grew into who I am today. It never affected my grades at all, and I was able to balance school and training really well.I truly loved karate. It was something I always looked forward to, and it became a big part of my life. Not only did I enjoy it, but I also learned how to defend myself, which gave me a lot of confidence and helped me feel stronger and more prepared.I was also part of the leadership program, where I had the opportunity to help instruct younger students. That experience meant a lot to me because it taught me how to be a leader, how to be patient, and how to support others. It helped build my confidence in a completely different way and gave me skills I still use today.Leaving was honestly really hard. I didn’t quit because I didn’t like it, it was never that. I loved my sensei's and the dojo. I only left because I wanted to pursue boxing, but I was genuinely sad to go. It felt like leaving a second home.Sensei Paul and Sensei Joe are two of the kindest, most genuine people I’ve ever met. They truly care about their students, not just as martial artists but as people. They took the time to teach me discipline, respect, and kindness, and those lessons have stayed with me long after I left. I still carry those values with me every day.I made so many great memories and meaningful connections there. It was a place where I felt supported, encouraged, and cared about. Looking back, I can honestly say AMA played a huge role in shaping me into a kind, respectful, and strong person. This dojo is truly the best and, in my opinion, far better than many others. I’ll always be grateful to Sensei Paul and Sensei Joe for everything they’ve done for me. They’re not just amazing instructors, they’re amazing people. I truly loved my time at AMA, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Now I’m a junior in high school, turning 18 soon, and I’m doing well in boxing. I still use many of the things I learned from Sensei Paul and Sensei Joe to this day, and I know those lessons will stay with me for the rest of my life.
