Despite the owner publicly claiming they responded via email, no email was ever received. They have ignored two direct attempts to contact them regarding this situation.I fully understand that medical emergencies happen. The issue is not that an employee had a medical emergency — the issue is the complete lack of communication, organization, and professionalism shown to paying guests during and after the situation.I traveled from out of town for THIS experience specifically and spent money on lodging, gas, food, planning, and preparation.I arrived around 15 minutes early for the stated 2:30 PM meet time for the 3:00 PM launch and was immediately met with a completely locked building, no employees present, no organized check-in, no signage (other than a sign that literally excuses a lack of any and all employee presence for bathroom and BEACH visits), and no information regarding equipment, launch procedures, or where guests were even supposed to be.Over the next 20+ minutes, multiple confused guests continued arriving while company-associated employees who eventually showed up sat nearby offering absolutely no proactive communication despite clearly knowing something was wrong. Guests were left wandering around trying to determine whether the tour was even happening.A shuttle eventually arrived AFTER the meet time had already passed, dropped passengers off, then went to park? When I directly asked for information regarding the tour, I was told they had to “figure out what was going on.” The staff present also stated they were only shuttle drivers. That is not acceptable for a guided outdoor excursion past the meet time. The employees present at the rendezvous either had no ability to contact management or were unwilling. Nobody appeared to be in charge. No guide was present. No leadership existed. No confidence was inspired whatsoever. As a former kayaking guide myself, I have never seen a guided outdoor operation run this poorly. If staff are not going to be physically present at an offsite rendezvous, guests should be directed to meet at the launch site instead. At the absolute minimum, the guide should already be there before guests begin arriving. WELL before.Instead, what I experienced was confusion, silence, disorganization, and complete operational incompetence from a company responsible for leading people onto Lake Superior. Considering Lake Superior is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable freshwater lakes in the world, the level of disorganization displayed was completely unacceptable. The owner’s response also ignores the issue of poor communications by himself and his employees, and instead attempts to frame the issue as my inability to “adapt.” Adaptability is not the issue here. Professional outdoor operations are still expected to communicate with guests, maintain organization, and have contingency plans when emergencies happen.I chose not to participate because I had absolutely no confidence in the professionalism or management of the company or offered experience given the communication offered at the rendezvous. Frankly, after what I witnessed, I would never trust this company with my outdoor excursion or personal safety. At this point they are clearly refusing any refund, so I will be pursuing other avenues regarding the matter.I would not recommend booking with this company based on the experience I had, and I believe the owner’s response speaks for itself.
