A few years ago, while living in Kahana, Maui, I had the pleasure of meeting Chef David Paul Johnson. At the time, his reputation as a chef and restaurateur in Lahaina was already well known, and for good reason. David Paul’s Island Grill offered a high-end New Island Cuisine experience, complete with white-tablecloth service and attentive hospitality. I often found myself enjoying exceptional meals at the bar or lingering over afternoon cocktails. The food was consistently excellent, and it was easy to understand why the restaurant was always so busy with both visitors and locals alike. His passion for the craft and dedication to service were always evident.Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to reconnect with Chef David and gain a deeper appreciation for the man behind the apron and stove. His passion has never wavered, and his drive to teach, serve, and create memorable experiences remains strong. Recently, I had the pleasure of cooking alongside him at his home, where he prepared dinner for friends. It was a humbling experience, and any opportunity to share kitchen space while cooking for friends and family is truly a treat.As chefs, we are often judged by the last great meal we prepared. We worked together on events over the years from a private catering on a yacht in Maui from David Paul's Lahaina Grill and at his David Paul's Diamond Head restaurant in Honolulu. Chef David Paul came to my rescue in creating a custom dining experience for an 80-person VIP group that I organized at an exclusive larger event. Chef David Paul provided a cooking class at our home. Many of us weren't experienced in culinary skills. Chef David Paul was very patient with us and educated us while we prepared tasty dishes. We also had a lot of fun while learning from him. We will definitely book him again.

We booked Chef David Paul for a private dinner during our family trip to Hawaii, and it honestly ended up being one of the best parts of the whole trip.From the beginning, he was super easy to communicate with and really took the time to understand what we wanted. When he showed up, his energy just made everything feel relaxed and fun right away.He went out of his way to make sure everyone was taken care of, especially the kids. He made them their own kid-friendly meal and they actually ate everything, which never happens. They were so excited about it.The food was amazing. Every dish looked beautiful and tasted even better, and everything came out perfectly timed so we could just enjoy the night without feeling rushed. My mom had never tried fish before and was a little unsure, but he made something that completely changed her mind. She kept saying how surprised she was that she loved it.On top of that, he’s just a really personable and funny guy. It didn’t feel like we hired someone, it felt like we had a friend there cooking for us.If you’re visiting Hawaii and thinking about doing a private dinner, I would 100% recommend Chef David Paul. Such a special experience and something we’ll always remember.

David hasn't lost his touch of combining eloquent flavors with local flair. At a recent home dinner hosted by him, his array of cuisines brought back memories of his culinary masterings but updated with blends of flavors not yet acquired by current cooks. I was fortunate to sample his new salad dressings and the trio of various offerings will be items that won't stay on supermarket shelves very long. Chef is back, and whatever the future holds for this conqueror of the kitchen, you can rest assure it will be something to look forward to. He's certainly on the right path.

Chef David Paul is a true culinary master! I've known David for over 40 years and have had the pleasure of enjoying his creative, tasteful cuisine at his restaurants and at many private events. Recently, Chef David Paul catered my family reunion in Kailua and it was an incredible event, not the least of which was the food. Everyone had a great time and complimented the food, presentation and experience. Chef David Paul did an amazing job with the menu, setup, and was wondeful interacting with the guests.
