First review of 2018 goes to CFHK, my new home and substitute for a social life. All kinds of people go to this box, including young, old, skinny, rotund, shiny beginners, seasoned members. So ignore the other reviewer who wrote that she was treated poorly because of how she looked/was dressed. *EYE ROLL* *SIT DOWN YELP BITCH BE HUMBLE* It's been five months now, and I've loved it here since day one. It's something you come to look forward to daily, and yes, I realize how masochistic that sounds. Whether you want to lose weight, get lean, build muscle, become better at CrossFit, or meet hot guys, this is where you do it at. What makes HK different from other boxes I've tried, including ones in California and Asia, is that each class is split into two thirty-minute long segments: Strength, in which you work on strength training, and Metcon, in which you do some sort of ab workout, and then a WOD (workout of the day). The coach, either Anthony himself or one of the part-time coaches, explains each move at the beginning of class, and then you make the magic happen. The coaches give it to you straight, no BS, and answer all the questions I bug them with. They introduce out-of-towners or new members at the beginning. Most workouts are intense, and you build up from the bottom, and scale down if you need. There's a program called Wodify that you use to track your progress, available in class or on mobile, along with heart rate monitors you can wear to track heart rate and burned calories. Honorable mention goes to Saturday classes, which are partner workouts, my fave. There's a small gym section upstairs, where you may stretch, socialize, or do extra work, along with locker rooms, which include two showers. Shower products aren't consistent, but they do have some sort of universal hair/body wash concoction. Bring your own everything else. Unrelated to this box, but what I love about CrossFit is that: 1- you have a personal trainer every single class 2- you learn about form and technique. Over and over and over again. No really, it doesn't stop. 3- it affects your entire life, like diet, nutrition, water intake, posture, basic real-world movements (I can climb a rope now holla!), etc 4- it's quality over quantity (a class is an hour, and the program is done for you, whereas most people who go to gyms meander about for a few hours and have no idea what they're doing UGH FOR SHAME) 5- you join a community (or a cult, a really fit and sexy cult) of very interesting, friendly, ambitious, and accomplished people 6- you're able to track progress in a concrete and qualitative way, which is something you don't do in Tonehouse, spinning, boxing, or zumba (sorry not sorry, bye) 7- your only competition is yourself (cliché but true) No, it's not any more dangerous than any other physical activity, no, women won't one day wake up looking bulky, and no, you're not too young, old, weak, or strong to try it. Peep the Groupon deal they have to give it a shot. Then, come find me in class and let's get better-looking naked together (no really, I need a squat partner, come find me).
