My husband and I took this tour as part of our 48th Wedding Anniversary trip. So glad we did. Alphonso was extremely knowledgeable and personable. We could have easily gone longer than the allotted 2 hours. We highly recommend this tour!

We have done so many tours in Charleston and this one was so unique and informative. We learned so many things, our guide was phenomenal, we really felt immersed in the Gullah language. You are on an air conditioned bus for the duration of the tour as well for those concerned about our southern heat and humidity or walking long distances.

This was a very enjoyable and informative tour. It provided a great understanding of the significant impact Black Charlestonians had on the history and development of the city. However, the tour’s name suggests there will be a deeper focus on Gullah/Geechee culture. That topic was only discussed briefly before the tour began. Overall, I enjoyed the experience, but I would have appreciated learning more about Gullah/Geechee history, traditions, and culture.

Mr. Brown's level of knowledge was excellent! Although he has a heavy accent, he made sure that we understood everything that he was explaining. We felt as though we had a better understanding of the history of Charleston after.our tour. He made us want to take a deeper dive into history, we even purchased his book so that we could learn more. Excellent Job, I was concerned that 2 hours wouldn't be enough, but it was plenty of time.

Any and everybody coming into the city of Charleston needs to take this tour. Very informative. Very real. Mr. Alphonso IS the culture and encompasses the heart and the history of this city. Fair warning, this is a very emotionally heavy tour so please prepare yourself as best as you can. My partner and I got a massage right after this and it was much needed. Thank you Mr. Alphonso. Gullah tours was exactly what I needed. A true snapshot of Gullah lifestyle in Charleston from slavery to present. The mixture of Gullah, the Caribbean and African history. Mr Brown is a native born Gullah resident. He shared with us the history of Gullah through his personal experiences growing up. He kept it fun and interactive. He really leaves you with a lot to think about. If you want a tour of Gullah history/lifestyle this is the tour for you.
