I have trained BJJ at a number of places over the years... with numerous multi year breaks. Harrisburg BJJ is where I finally found my "home." Dave and Gregg welcome you with open arms. They are the owners but also invested and constantly at the gyms teaching. They will even roll with you. They spend time helping you and really do care. They also have some of the best training around, incredibly affordable monthly rates, and many other perks. One of the biggest perks to me is countless classes. I could go almost every hour of the day I'm not working. I can find a class before work, on lunch break, or any time from 5 PM to 9 PM. And there's no limit to how much you go. I don't have to plan a set schedule around my busy life because if I miss one day there is always another class I can go to. I don't have to worry "oh man, I missed Monday and now there's nothing until Thursday." I can just get the feeling like I want to go right now and there will be a class somewhere for me to go to. And you can go to ANY of their gyms - I regularly go to two different gyms they have. It's no added cost. I believe they are up to 5 schools now. They have around 1,500 students I believe. They have tons of black, brown, purple, and blue belts so you're always learning and seeing new things. They also have tons of whitebelts... so if you're new you will not feel alone. Other coaches like Joe S, Landen, and Dave U are incredible. I love their classes and look forward to when I get to train with them. They all have their own style, different techniques, and just make it fun.If you're older (like me) or want a slower pace - take BJJ fundamentals. If you want a ton of rolling, take normal BJJ class. If you want MMA or wrestling there are classes. If you want Judo, Dave is the president of the USJA and teaches. Talk about getting one of the best and most invested people around for Judo. There are also other Judo black belts to learn from. They really do have it all.If you're shopping around, don't just compare one schedule for Harrisburg BJJ. Again, you can go to any gym. Most schools have one gym with a minimal schedule. Here you can go to Harrisburg one day, Carlisle one day, Lemoyne one day, etc. Compare other school's 1 schedule to ALL that would be available to you. Then compare pricing, see if the other schools have limits on how many classes a week, and the fact that you'll have such a huge range of black, brown, and purple belts to train with daily. The comparison won't even come close. They also have great seminars! Some other schools might get a black belt from 2 hours away once a year to come give a seminar. Harrisburg BJJ brings in Rodolfo Vieira, Robert Drysdale, Robson Moura, Ricardo Liborio, etc - the Michael Jordons of BJJ to do seminars. They get Nick Delpopolo - an Olympian in judo. Darrell Horcher - an active UFC fighter. You can train with the legends of the game! And it's not just once a year.New to BJJ, Judo, martial arts, or just physical activity in general? No biggie. There are tons of others in the exact same boat. It seems scary to walk in on day 1. I promise you, there is absolutely no need to be scared. You will be fine, you will be welcomed, and you will have fun. The biggest hurdle is just that first walk through the door. I never saw anyone make the leap and go "I wish I didn't." I cannot stress this enough - it may seem scary, but you will be fine, have fun, and be glad you went. Take the jump. Don't worry about getting in shape first or anything else you might have a concern with. Just show up and try. You will find a new hobby and a great community of new friends.
