I want to give this a 5 but one volunteer made my spouse and I feel like our family was being parented for no reason and as a result kept missing history being shared about the areas we were passing through. In the 2 hour ride, we were interrupted by this person more than 6 times who added zero benefit to our experience. Our children were quiet, respectful and were not bothering any other passengers. In fact, we were quieter than most groups in our car.Before that started, we loved the experience. It was calm, the cars were very clean, the fact the 100 year old windows opened made the train very enjoyable, vs inconsistent AC that only works in half the cars with no windows that open. The open air car was awesome, my oldest loved our time spent on that train car. What we did hear of the history was very cool to learn. The pictures they came by with were an added bonus too! The one volunteer also came through with the conductor hat for a photo op, but by that point my children had no interest because they had already ruined the experience for them.Overall, I will probablu do this ride again as my children are obsessed with trains and it's a beautiful ride, also very affordable.

This was such a fun way to spend time with my family on 4th of July. The cars were decorated with red, white, and blue, and they even had a fun jellybean guessing contest. When we went the weather was perfect so we sat in the open-air car and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful views and the very informative and interesting commentary. The loud speakers were clear and easy to understand (unlike some overhead bus tour speakers), the volunteer workers were knowledgeable and friendly, and I learned a lot about the area that I didn't know before. Definitely worth a visit!

We enjoyed our time on our excursion. The volunteers were helpful, friendly, and welcoming with lots of education to offer. The ride itself was beautiful. They had a fun jellybean counting contest, and concessions for the kids. There was also an outdoor car for us to enjoy the fully outdoor views when desired. We would definitely visit again, especially to see the fall foliage.

Definitely worth the ticket price! This was an amazing experience to relish during the fall, when the leaves are coming down like rain and the weather is much milder. I hope to come back next year, as this was a very memorable experience. There really isn't any direct competition with the North Shore Scenic Railway, as this out of the way little railroad is all volunteer, with wonderful, kind, kid friendly staff and volunteers who love and know the railroad. If I lived closer I would happily volunteer here.TLDR: if ya have 25 bucks, spend it on a Lake Superior and Mississippi ticket on a weekend! 10/10! Beautiful and fun!

What a lovely ride! We had a delightful time on the train learning about the industrial history and restoration processes of the St. Louis river. Loved how the volunteers showed us various artifacts like photos, slag from slag point and, and a piece of an old white pine complete with a brand stamp on the end from when felled trees were floated down the river for milling. Narration was informative and interesting!

The greatest railroad excursion ever. Inexpensive compared to the Zephyr and beautiful scenery along the river. The open train on the way out was beautiful and the two grandchildren loved it. Goes at a nice slow pace so you can enjoy the scenery and the little ones can roam the train and walk around.

Great experience, the volunteers do a wonderful job of everything! The ticket process was easy, logistics of boarding was great, and the information provided during the ride was very informative. We had a gorgeous day for a ride.Tip: there's a cash concession area that I didn't realize when we went so bring cash to for a snack and help fund the train.

DO IT. Just book the excursion! This is an awesome old switch engine, with two old passenger cars with original seating, and an outdoor "safari" car. The volunteers are AMAZING, knowledgeable, friendly, and kind. The tour narrator talked about industry along the railroad from a historical perspective, including native American history and how the water ways are being cleaned up post-industry. Being on the old tracks in old cars was just a delight and having the option to be outside for the ride was phenomenal. It's a beautiful view too! Personally, I preferred this ride over the North Shore ride because of the scenery and the volunteers.

Took the train for the second time today. Truly one of the most scenic excursions you can take, and reiterated by both parties we took the train with, "I can't believe all of this is back here".The ride is wonderful, the staff and volunteers obviously enjoy being there, and they're very happy to educate everyone. The trip out is wonderfully narrated and highlights a bunch of historical features, such as the Finnish school and the restoration projects repairing the old steel mill/industrial sites.This should be right up there with the top tourist destinations and excursions in Duluth. There is a specific beauty that this ride captures that the North Shore Scenic Railroad absolutely cannot.
