I've gone here twice now, after initially finding this place through a Groupon, and both massages were excellent. Victoria, the massage therapist, is very passionate about her work and was able to find and relieve so many hidden tight spots causing me pain. You get good value for your money here because she doesn't try to nickel and dime you and will use whatever modalities she feels your body needs. She used some hot stones, hot packs on my back, and cupping on me to help get some relief in painfully tight areas which seemed to further aid an already good massage, and she does not charge extra for these things. I had a painfully tight right shoulder and bad plantar fasciitis from tight calves. It can take a few days to recover from deep tissue work, but even with that, I felt immediate relief in my impinged shoulder and my plantar fasciitis was improved a bit just from the massage. I felt further relief from it after the second massage two weeks later. After using the initial groupon, she gave me a good deal on a three pack massage package, so I decided to do that deal, and am glad I did because her work is excellent and is providing me much needed pain relief. After months of tight hamstrings, my hamstrings are barely tight now.I will note, it was a bit difficult to get an appointment here by calling because it's a one person operation here, so she can't interrupt a massage to answer the phone. I had luck finally getting an appointment after I sent a message online and she called to schedule one. Then once I got in, I just scheduled my future three appointments all at once, so no need to call again. The business phone number listed is a cell phone, so I recommend either messaging online or sending a text to schedule if you're having trouble getting through by calling, and she will call you back to schedule. If you're looking for a more corporate style massage place then this might not be for you, but if you just want a quality massage from a skilled professional who is also friendly and personable, then I highly recommend this place! I never had the opportunity to work with a person to choose a date and time that worked best for me but since I was available that day I agreed to the appointment since it was three weeks out from when I called. I received a phone call the day before my appointment where they said they had to cancel because of a training they had to go to stay certified. The next appointment they could offer me was another three weeks out.The lady I spoke to was nice enough but I would think that you should know more than 24 hours in advance if you need to attend a '"training" to keep your businesses certification valid. She relayed my message to Island Massage and I received a phone call back literally a 1/2 hour later.Now that I have gotten in and just finished with my 2nd appointment, I only have one word to describe the massages: AMAZING!!! My lower back had really been starting to bother me previous to my first massage, and I also have a family history of back problems, but after that first one, my back felt 100% better. The massage oils and hot rocks that the masseuse uses feel incredible, and she really does a great job of working out the tightness of the muscles. And I really liked how she kept me informed the whole time about how my muscles were responding to the massage. I highly recommend the deep tissue massage from Island Therapeutic Massage. I love massages. I have had a few over the last few years, massages can be expensive. A family member referred me to Island Therapeutic Massage and had bought me a package of massages as a gift.Since going to Island Therapeutic every two weeks I have had more energy and the pain has subsided to the point that I don't need medications to assist with easing it. Benefits last almost two weeks for me. By the time the pain returns, I already have an appointment set up to go in the next day.I have to say that this operation is amazing. Located in a peaceful area right off of the highway, makes it easy to get to. Rooms are quiet and clean. All of the massage therapists are professional and talented. The cost of massages are easily at least half of what others charge (more like 1/3) and for twice as long (I believe that all massages there start at 1 hr).Some tips:1. Please make sure that you book ahead of time. This place is so awesome that you might not get in right when you want to. However they do try to accommodate. They have never cancelled an appointment on me.2. Try all of the therapists. Each one of them have their own style. All of them are professional. I have had massages from both men and women there and never felt uncomfortable. However, they do ask your preference when setting up the appointment. All therapists have you leaving feeling relaxed. :D3.The ambiance is simple. However, they never try to sell you anything, unlike "fancy" spas. All rooms are warm and inviting.4. You will feel pressure and may feel discomfort ("pain")....this is a good thing. It might be uncomfortable as you get your massage and it might hurt after your massage for a day. Would like to play a game of find-a-massage with Island Therapeutic? If so, start by calling the owner who never answers the phone, leave several messages and wait to be called back. Finally, schedule an appointment and proceed to East Lake Street location. Here you will see a scented body oil shop and a cafe that may or may not be selling khat. There aren't any actual signs, but finally you figure out you are supposed to head up some rickety, nasty stairs. Now head into some ghetto apartment converted into a massage parlor. Your masseuse has no formal training, but it won't matter because she doesn't seem to care anyway. Proceed to a back room where an uncomfortable table is set up with duct taped foam padding and no real head rest. Now get naked and wait forever until masseuse decides to actually start the session. Relaxing music will not be played so don't ask, also don't ask about sexual services as several handwritten notes taped to the wall indicate this is not allowed. If this sounds like a massage experience you are interested in than begin by calling the owner today. Maybe you'll get massage within a week or two? Anyways I'm one to check something out for myself first, so I booked at Woodbury location. First red flag is they make you give your credit card number while booking the appt. Seemed odd and I objected at first but the guy insisted thats how it works in order to "save" your appt. Anyways so I show up to this "spa" and it's in a dark and cigarette smelling office park building! Kind of creepy and slightly worrisome since I'm there for a prenatal massage.... There's a paper sign on the door that says "Island Therapeutic Massage" like it was printed off Microsoft Word and taped on the door. So I walk in and it's a dim 20x20 room with two beds, NO ONE was in the room and I sat in the chairs in front of the "reception desk" for like 15 minutes before I got up and just left. This is not a spa at all. It's a tiny office room with two beds hidden by curtains and shi**y decorations that make you feel like you're at a cheap chinese restaurant. There's also a paper sign that reads "NO EROTIC MASSAGES OR SEXUAL MASSAGES TOLERATED!" Ummmmm any massage establishment where they have to preface that before hand? No thanks. So I just walked out. Then I find out they charged my credit card $10 for a "no show" fee. So there ya go. SKIP THIS PLACE!!!!!!!! NOT WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also called groupon and complained. My HORRIBLE experience is best described in bullet points.1. the place was very dirty (walls needed a fresh coat of paint, chairs were dirty, etc)2. when the massage therapist came out, she barely acknowledged me. throughout the entire experience, it seemed like she really didn't have the people skills that are needed to be a massage therapist. not friendly at all. she wasn't mean, but just not a communicator in any way.3. the room that i was brought to was a big room that had 2 massage tables in it which were separated by curtains. so much for privacy. there wasn't another client there, but if there had been, a person could have easily peeked in on me while i was changing. also, during my massage a few of the ladies that worked there came in and started talking and giggling loudly. this happened on 2 occasions during the hour. my therapist didn't do anything about it. WTF?4. the massage table was hard and uncomfortable. the face cradle did not have any fabric on it and was all squished and uncomfortable. i had to have my face on vinyl and wood and god knows what germs were there. there should have been a cover on it for sanitary reasons if not for comfort.5. no bolster for the legs- that is standard equipment for a massage6. no relaxing music- there was some annoying sound coming from the other partitioned area that was perhaps supposed to be the sound of wind or waves. bad attempt7. therapist didn't ask me any questions about myself. such as: what is bothering you, how much pressure do you like, etc. she told me she was going to do a full body massage and that was it. Again- WTF?8. tons and tons of road noise from lake street. this was not the ideal building or location for a massage parlor or they shouldn't have any of the massage rooms near the busy street.9. massage therapist was an obvious smoker and smelled like a bar. there are things that can be done about that. it gave me a headache10. massage therapist did not have adequate skills. she just kept doing the same method over and over on the same spots. it was as though she didn't have any formal training. her draping technique was none. she never re-adjusted if the sheet fell too low. i had to do it myself11. they used cooking oil for the massage, not lotion. gross12. there was a sign on the wall that was a little alarming. something pertaining to "no inappropriate touching". is it really neccessary to publish that? maybe it is in that are, but it creeped me out from the beginning.I felt vulnerable and filthy the entire time I was there. My experience at Island Therapeutic was horrible. The entire staff were completely unprofessional, from the scheduling to the massage, to the tipping: start to finish. It took me an hour to schedule an appointment with the receptionist, calling back and forth, not being able to schedule for a particular location. I was told that I could use the groupon for two 90-minute massages instead of three 60-minute and that is was I scheduled for. When I arrived with my boyfriend (for his birthday, mind you, and first massage experience) they only scheduled us for 60-minute massages. The massage therapists seemed untrained and unprofessional. Two other therapists were talking LOUDLY behind a sheet (which was the only thing separating the rooms) about drugs and other inappropriate subject matter. They used cooking olive oil for the massage. Disgusting experience the entire way through. I asked to break a large bill so that I could tip them (out of custom, not that they deserved it) and no one could. The 'good' news that the receptionist reminded me of after all of their inadequacies and mistakes, I still have a 60-minute massage left to use at their location! Took 20 minutes to book 2 massage appointments.Get a phone call the day before my massage is scheduled saying they have to re-book due to lack of employees at the Woodbury, MN location and I had to go to Minneapolis and rebook my massage. OK, fair enough. Next opening was conveniently 3 weeks later and 25 minutes further. December 1st comes along, we call at 10:00am to confirm the appointment as they did not confirm with us prior. Was a disaster trying to get appointment confirmed for 1pm same day. We get about 10 minutes from their Lake Street location to a surprising phone call from the owner. "Hi MIke, sorry we're over booked we need to reschedule." Response, "NO, I want a full refund, this is ridiculous, I'm 10 minutes away!" her reply "ok, thanks, have a good day" BWAHAHAHAHA are you serious? Then after having called 12 different times in 2 weeks to FINALLY get the exact appointment correct (because they had to reschedule and couldn't remember what they scheduled me for EVERY time) I had my appt on the morning of my birthday. when I drove up and walked in, I thought this must be a joke, it was so gross and dark and run down. And the masseuse was telling me to hold on, she was on her cell phone because she needed to find daycare for her kids. And she smelled like a giant cigarette! GROSS! The masseuse did not stop TALKING! NOT ONCE!!!! I'm not kidding you. And she found out I lived in the same city as her and she asked if I could babysit her kids!!!!!
