After seeing a neurologist, I discovered that I have a severely hypoplastic right A1 segment (Circle of Willis anomaly, which may or may not be associated with the migraines), and I was told that my only treatment option was long-term symptom management via medication that also offered some atrocious side-effects. Having already been down that route in my late teens, I resorted to OTCs and just dealing with the pain. This choice was not without its cons, however. On most days, it was not uncommon to go to bed with the same headache that had awakened me from my slumber that morning, and for this to continue for days at a time. In fact, this pattern became such a normalcy, that to awaken without any experience of neurologic pain was to be consumed by anxiety of anticipating the next round. To make matters worse, I recently developed a new type of migraine that was severely debilitating, non-respondent to any combination of OTCs/trigger abstinence/etc. and was also cyclical in nature. Having endometriosis, I was already aware of the possibility of hormonal imbalance, and having had chronic exposure to traumatic events, I was also aware of the possibility of altered functioning of my hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympatho-adrenal-medullary system (i.e., my body tapped out on maintaining its hormonal homeostatic set point, which could be in part due to spinal interference). Considering this, I decided to do some research, and I came across several scholarly articles that mentioned chiropractic care as an alternative/combinate treatment option. After examining chiropractors in the local area, I chose who I thought would be the best fit for me, Dr. Ashlock. I must admit that I had little (if any) hope of gaining any relief, for a life without migraines seemed too much like the glorious end of a fairytale (i.e., at this point, the placebo effect is practically null and void). Fast forward some weeks into the treatment plan, and I am happy to report a decrease in frequency, duration, and intensity of my ‘normal’ migraines, and I have also been able to cut my OTC use in half. On one occasion, I was even awestruck after experiencing immediate relief from one of my severe and non-OTC-respondent migraines upon receiving a manipulation, and for the first time in 3 years, the second week of this month came and went without ANY severely debilitating episode. Needless to say, Dr. Ashlock is extraordinarily proficient in the field of Chiropractic care, and I highly recommend him. Apart from Dr. Ashlock himself, his assistant is also phenomenal. She is a skilled communicator who radiates compassion, and she has a smile that will light up any room. Within two weeks my acute issue of an out-of-whack rib was improving, and now my back feels better than it did before my two pregnancies. He also made adjustments that help with nagging lower back and neck pain; I don't have to uncurl myself after playing in the floor with my kids, and I was able to start running again and still function the next day!
