I recently visited Ivan Clarke after his artwork was moved from the gallery in central Queenstown back to his private studio and exhibition space. One important tip: be sure to book your visit through Ivan Clarke's official website before you go. Otherwise, you might end up like me, unexpectedly showing up at 9:30 in the morning while they were having breakfast!Despite my surprise arrival, Ivan and his wife welcomed me with such genuine warmth and kindness. I am still very sorry for interrupting their breakfast! Ivan invited me to wander freely through the collection while he sat down and played the piano.Can you imagine that? Looking at the original Lonely Dog paintings while the artist himself is playing the piano just behind you. It was one of the most magical and unforgettable experiences I have ever had.His wife kindly brought me a cup of peppermint tea, so there I was, sipping tea, admiring these incredible paintings, listening to live piano music, and then their adorable dogs wandered in. Petting their lovely dogs while surrounded by the Lonely Dog collection felt almost surreal.What impressed me most was the incredible range of Ivan's work. From his iconic Lonely Dog to breathtaking landscapes and nature scenes, every piece showcases a different side of his artistic talent. It is amazing to see how versatile he is as an artist.One of the best parts of visiting the new exhibition space is that you can see many more original works than were displayed in the old Queenstown gallery, making the experience feel even more special.Thank you both for your incredible hospitality. Best gallery and artist in New Zealand past and present. His amazing gallery has closed in Queenstown centre but he has just opened a more private intimate gallery right next to his amazing home in his estate. A must see place and he even played the piano for us the whole time, he was very good at it too. I have been Ivans biggest fan since I was a girl and this was my first time meeting him. It was such a honor and he was so kind, open and interesting to talk to. I will be returning every time I come to queenstown. Thank you so much Ivan, you were so wonderful to us and thank you so much for the signed lonely dog novel. I will cherish it forever. You will hear from us again soon!

What an amazing gallery. The setting is beautiful but the artwork is stunning. I was in a group of 13 Australian ladies who visited during a tour of the South Island in late April ‘26. Ivan was very hospitable and took the time to show us and talk about each piece on display. I’m still trying to work out which I liked best, the stunning landscapes or the canines dressed in “gentlemanly attire”.I would highly recommend a visit!

We love the Ivan Clarke gallery with the Lonely dog and NZ scenic paintings. Staff are lovely and informative. A treat to see artwork from Raquel Clarke too which is very different from her Father's but something I could find a place for in my home.
