Maek Friends

The new Encinitas location for Maek Friends is open and airy. Staff that I’ve interacted with (Holly and Brian) are genuinely pleasant, welcoming and very professional. They are very supportive of clientele’s needs no matter the skill level and are more than willing to answer questions and provide solutions to individual issues. They are very knowledgeable and willing to listen and share information and techniques. Holly and Brian are key contributors to the overall pleasant atmosphere as well as the seamless smooth studio operation. The equipment is high quality, well maintained and supplies such as clay and ancillary tools and materials are readily available and accessible regardless whether your focus is wheel work, hand building or glazing. The lack of a professional grade full size extruder at the Encinitas location is the only thing missing from what is otherwise a truly exceptional collective studio. The on line booking system ensures that the equipment/space you want to use is available, though at peak demand times it can feel a bit crowded. However, their wide range of operating hours allows for flexibility in scheduling. In my experience, the main attribute that sets Maek Friends apart from other similar ceramics collectives is that other than basic studio protocols and conventions they allow a very wide latitude for pursuing individual interests and projects. For example, members are permitted to use outside clay/gazes (after staff vetting). This is a major incentive for creating an environment for creative growth and inspiration.Overall, whatever your skill level, if you are looking for a turnkey experience and space to pursue your interest in clay the Maek Friends collective is highly recommended as the place where you can make that happen.
