If you are portrait photographer and you have the opportunity to attend one of Simon's workshops, don't hesitate: It will change your approach to portrait photography and significantly improve the quality of your work. I've attended numerous photography workshops over the years. The typical workshop consists of a lecture and some shooting in which all attendees end up with basically the same images. Rarely do participants actually help contribute to building the actual set from scratch with choice of clothing, props, backdrops, lighting-and have the benefit of having someone guide your decisions: support your good decisions and guide you to better ones. That's what Simon does. You learn by doing, by being an active participant, by thinking through the process. His workshop is challenging but if you let go what you think you know and open up to his teaching, you finish the workshop a much better photographer. Less

My only advice is to other consumers/customers: make sure you understand what you're paying for from the beginning. A few times I had an "oh!" moment when I realized what I was going to get for my money. See below for more info... The photo shoot was all as I imagined, except the fact that we had to whittle down the photo choices at 2 AM in the morning - from approx 300+ photos to the number I was purchasing (12). This was in part due to the fact that we began at 6 PM and Simon took his time (as he should) w/ the photography/setups, etc. However, I was DEAD tired and this felt EXTREMELY rushed. I hadn't realized beforehand that I wouldn't have time to leisurely view all the photos on my home computer and pick the ones I liked the most, in a relaxed environment. It's been a LONG time since I had a photo shoot - maybe this is how they're all done now? In any case, I wish I had more warning about that timeline. Another thing to note is that the photo prints I received, printed by Simon, were on all cotton matte paper. This paper seems to be highly sensitive to fingernails, fingers, etc - basically it really easily scuffs. When I picked up the prints about 1/3 of the prints were visibly scuffed and I had to point that out to Simon. Luckily he was more than willing to re-print the photos and I left with all of my prints in plastic to prevent further scuffing. **Make sure to ask about other paper options if this is important to you.** Lastly, maybe I missed this part when signing the contract, but the digital images you receive will be for computer/screen/social media only. They can only be printed to 4"x6" and you will not be getting any sort of resolution than suffices for anything bigger than that. This was the biggest disappointment for me, as I am not a big social media person and really mostly cared about being able to re-print the photos in the future (w/out having to pay Simon again). Working with him at my side, I was able to observe the nuances given to light placement and posing arrangements, as well as makeup and wardrobe details. I came away from his two day workshop feeling more confident and secure in my ability to create great art. I then returned to my studio and used what I learned to create this image. I especially payed attention to foot placement and pedal placement while also focusing on being sure the hands were relaxed and placed in an eye pleasing alignment. I asked the client to gaze into nothingness while locking his eyes on the lens. I even tossed if a gold scarf I had laying around to pull this whole thing together. Thank you, Simon.
