This week, during one of the hottest days, we encountered an issue with our AC unit, which had stopped working properly. In need of urgent assistance, we reached out to North Star Heating and Air Conditioning. They provided a timeframe of 4-6 pm for a technician to visit, with a possibility of an earlier arrival. The technician contacted me shortly after 4 pm, stating he would arrive in 30-35 minutes. However, he did not arrive until over an hour and 10 minutes later. Upon arrival, the technician suggested that the issue might be with the capacitor and proceeded to inspect the unit. Without prior communication, he installed a new capacitor. When explaining the repairs, he informed us that he did not have the specific capacitor required for our unit but had a substitute that would work that was $100 more expensive. Additionally, he mentioned that the distribution center had just closed, preventing him from obtaining the correct part until the next day. If he had arrived within the initially stated timeframe, he might have been able to get the right part that evening. The technician also attempted to upsell me on replacing the condenser fan, even though he indicated it was currently working fine indicating there was the possibility it could break down in the next year or two. Given that the temperature inside our house had reached 91 degrees and concerned for our well-being as seniors, I reluctantly agreed to the more expensive capacitor. Sensing my dissatisfaction, the technician offered a free future Heater/AC Inspection, explaining that if they had inspected our AC during the spring, the capacitor would have been 33% cheaper. However, since our AC unit was working fine earlier in the season, this inspection would not have necessarily helped. This experience left us feeling that North Star Heating and Air Conditioning arbitrarily raises their prices during peak seasons, taking advantage of their customers. Consequently, we will not be using their services in the future. Less

My issue was that the system was diagnosed as completely out of refrigerant and they were going to charge quite a bit to refill it (quoted for approximately 14 lbs of refrigerant). They also started to recommend a replacement system. Since my AC portion of the system was only 4 years old, at this point I stopped them and called the guy who installed the system and waited for him to get back in town. My condensing unit was cleaned, a small part where common leak occurs was replaced as a pre-caution and the system only needed 1-2 lbs of refrigerant added. The unit was vacuum and pressure tested and now I'm good to go. I'm not sure why the diagnosis was incorrect, but North Star followed up and made things right with me. They seem to be a great company, I just got wrong information from a miss diagnosis. Less

Mark the Technician was wonderful and was able to quickly find the problem. I called NorthStar because their sticker was on my furnace. My furnace had stopped blowing warm air. The woman who answered was able to find the account for the house. The previous owners of the home had a new furnace installed back in 2017 and it came with a 10 year warranty. (She mentioned on the phone that my furnace was still covered by the warranty). This was later in the evening and I agreed to pay the $119 late night service fee for a technician to come out. Again, he was great and prompt. This is not a reflection on him at all! There was a part that went bad but he made it so the furnace would still work and that he would come back the next day (12/29/2023). Come to find out that I have to pay an extra $149 for the part because it actually is not covered by their 10 year warranty because I bought the home back in 2020 and wasn't the home owner that installed the furnace. The 1 star is because I view handling a warranty like this complete B.S. and wanted to warn everyone on google. Especially because I treat the home significantly better than the previous home owner. I will spare you all the details but I am annoyed and upset. It is a minor charge of an $150 but I am beyond annoyed with handling a warranty like this. Less

We heard that if you get your system replaced in the slower season (march/April) you can save a lot. In March we called and got 4 quotes from different companies. North Star was the first company we had come out. They did not use any pressure tactics. They asked alot of questions to make sure we would get a great unit that would work for the house. They were very thorough and answered all of our questions. We let them know we had 3 more bids to have done. The sales guys offered to call us back to follow up. He was good about checking in without feeling pushy. We had one other company that told us they would match any bid we got pluse give us $50 off on top of that. North Star had the best price by far. We called the other company and they would match the price but the offer of the extra $50 was gone. Maybe North Stars price was too good. This other companies best price was a lot higher for a smaller less efficient unit. We called North Star back to see if they offered a cash discount, like this other company did. They gave us a cash discount and a free duct cleaning. They also have a included maintenance plan which none of the other companies did. There price and service were better then any of the other company's we talked to. Once we desided to go with them, they were able to schedule our installation for the next day. They had a manager come out a week or two after the install and do an Inspection to make sure everything was good with the install and the equipment. They have great communication. They even responded to texts after 5pm. They registered our equipment for the warranties for us as well. I am very impressed with this company. They will be my go to for any other services I need in the future. Less

Thank goodness for 2nd opinions. Our air conditioning went from working great one day to not working at all the next. Once Stop Heating and Air Conditioning came out and listed a myriad of issues with our air conditioning and furnace and recommended complete replacement of both. We stated we weren't in a financial position right now to do that. They gave us 6 possible solutions ranging from $9,817-14,781. So, we had North Star Heating and Air-conditioning come out. They quickly diagnosed the problem that our disconnect was bad, showed me the problem, fixed the problem the next day for a total of $450. One Stop didn't even mention that the disconnect was an issue. North Star, thank you for your honesty, promptness and professionalism. You have earned a life time customer. Less

The tech that came out to inspect us straight up lied about our furnace being damaged, needing to be replaced. He even stated that he legally had to shut it off. We ended up getting two other companies to come out who said our furnace was fine. I called who I believe was the owner. He was friendly, nice, and very helpful. I asked for a refund and we got it. We may have just got the one off employ... More

He came out for a free tuneup for my furnace & AC & I was skeptical knowing that a “free service” typically does more harm than good. Well, I was proven wrong! Not only was he super helpful he was not pushy, actually fixed some minor things. I actually had no interest in using them again after a previous experience but ... More

He came out for a free tuneup for my furnace & AC & I was skeptical knowing that a “free service” typically does more harm than good. Well, I was proven wrong! Not only was he super helpful he was not pushy, actually fixed some minor things. I actually had no interest in using them again after a previous experience but Doug now has me as a customer. Just be sure to ask for him! I’m now hiring them to clean my vents and will likely use them for inevitable future needs having 2 furnaces.
